2008 Artist Statement
Tracy Schneitter
Before I start a series of work, I like to look at nature, especially the textures and forms of trees. The substance and surface of tissue on a human body I interesting as well. I relate these surfaces as a protected layer. Humans have a protected layer by there skin, and the bark on a tree has a tough texture. I am inspired by the way Matisse applies his vibrant colors and the way he layers on the paint. In my work I use white stoneware, and then build up layers with colored slip.
When starting a piece I like to start with a basic cylinder form, and from there I start to manipulate it. My work is expressing life and death.
My spiritual faith heightens my senses to nature and the miracle of life. I enjoy making works that have meaning and depth. I want my work to leave a personal impact on the viewers. Many people I know take their lives for granted. I hope that the supernatural quality of my work may provoke them to consider life’s ephemerality.
